The team at Amels and Damen Yachting is delighted to announce the sale of the third Amels 200 which is scheduled for delivery in early 2024.

Amels and Damen Yachting Sales Director Rob Luijendijk worked with the Owner during the sale. ‘We are both proud and excited to be building this new 60-metre Amels 200 for our client. This is a yacht which combines original design and high volume with exceptional functionality to really provide the ultimate luxury yachting experience. This 60-metre (197ft) Limited Editions design, an evolution of the Amels 188, bears the unmistakable exterior design signature of Tim Heywood. Whilst the Amels 200 shares much of the naval architecture, high volume (Gross Tonnage of 1,015) and hybrid electrical power technology as her predecessor, the design also benefits from the additional length. Tim Heywood explains, ‘the additional length of the Amels 200 enhances the overall elegance and sophistication of my design, both inside and out. The larger windows create a lighter atmosphere to the interior, which is very welcoming. This is a yacht with complex, multifaceted forms, complimented with graceful flowing lines, which combine to create a real eye-catching yacht, of which I am extremely proud. Her many winding exterior surfaces allow the sun light and reflections to add to the magic and make her really special. I am delighted with the news that another Client has appreciated the beauty andsophistication of this design, along with the quality of her build. My congratulations to all the talented people at Amels, who have brought my design to life.’

In line with the exterior design pedigree, the custom interiors will also be the work of an industry design master. The client has selected Winch Design for the interiors. Whilst Winch Design know the Amels Limited Editions ranges very well, this Amels 200 will be their first from this design series. ‘The sale of this third hull in Amels’ 200 range marks yet another collaboration between Damen Yachting and Winch Design, and follows a brilliant team effort by all those involved so far. Earlier this year, Amels and Damen Yachting launched the first two Amels 200 which will be delivered to their Owners in the coming months. As per the first two yachts from this design, this Amels 200 also features a four-deck elevator, air-conditioned gym on Sun Deck, large aft decks and Swim Platform and full-height windows in the Owners Suite. VOLPINI 2 was the first yacht delivered from the original Amels 188 design.

Third Amels 200 Sold

A few months before her summer delivery, the first Amels 200 rolled out of her outfitting bay on a chilly winter day at the Damen Yachting yard in the Netherlands. The RoFlo launch is the first of the year for the Dutch yacht builder.

The sale of Project Amels 200-01 [/api/preview?slug=en/fleet/stella-m] was announced at the end of 2019 and now, following her launch, final outfitting and commissioning will take place quayside over the next few months. This 60-metre (197ft) Limited Editions design, complete with interior design by Reymond Langton, is an evolution of the Amels 188 and bears the unmistakable pedigree of exterior designer Tim Heywood. He explains how the originality and ingenuity of her exterior, allows her to stand out from other yachts of this size. ‘There are many features of this design that bring a smile to my face. The many flying buttresses, the complex winding surfaces, the upturned deck ends, the integrated life rafts, the sculptural mast and the complex stern, all form a harmonious design that sits securely in her environment, of which I am extremely proud. I believe her delicate, fluid lines will prove to be timeless and she will still look as attractive in 50 years’ time, as she does now.’
The Amels 200 design shares much of the naval architecture, high volume (Gross Tonnage of 1,015) and hybrid electrical power technology as her predecessor, as well as the four-deck elevator and air-conditioned gym on Sun Deck. However, the elongated Amels 200 has a number of enhancements, including larger aft decks and Swim Platform and full-height windows in the Owners Suite. Tim explains how this benefits the overall design. ‘The additional length invested into this design, has only increased her elegance and sophisticated appearance, as well as elevating the functionality of her interior, which is illuminated by enlarged windows. The many winding surfaces allow sun light and reflections to add to her magic, only possible by the sculptural forms and high gloss finish, achieved by her builders, who have invested so much time and effort into achieving perfection. The flowing lines of her multifaceted exterior are exactly as I imagined and the difficulties of her complex forms have been crafted with enormous care and talent.’

The Owner was represented by Burgess in the sale. Richard Lambert, Senior Partner – Head of Sales at Burgess comments: ‘It has been a pleasure to work with Amels and the Damen Yachting team on the build of 200-01. We have had a long-standing relationship with Amels and I am delighted that we have continued our successful collaboration with the shipyard to bring together this superb and exciting project for the client.’

Amels and Damen Yachting sales manager Jorrit Pilaar has worked closely with the team at Burgess throughout the sales and build process. ‘The launch of every yacht is of course a wonderful milestone in the build journey but for 200-01 it feels particularly special. It is the first of 2021, it is first Amels 200 and it is confirmation of the successful collaboration we have had with Burgess to ensure we have been able to offer the client fast delivery of an incredible project. I am very much looking forward seeing the final stages now come together ahead of her adventures later this year.‘

First Amels 200 launched

The team at Amels and Damen Yachting together with Moran Yacht & Ship has sold the new 74-metre Amels 242 ‘Project SHADOW’ for delivery in autumn 2021. The Tim Heywood designed yacht from the Dutch builder’s Limited Editions range will be completed with a unique interior by Winch Design.

In the sale, Moran Yacht & Ship represented the Owners, who have been closely involved in tailoring the yacht to their personal requirements. The Amels 242 will feature a dedicated Owners Deck with foredeck jacuzzi, an increased capacity helicopter deck and will be equipped with the latest Tier III clean emissions power and propulsion package.

Moran Yacht & Ship’s new build team will also supervise the completion and delivery of the yacht this year. This is the second 60-metre plus Amels superyacht signed by Moran Yacht & Ship in the last 12 months.

Damen Yachting Managing Director Rose Damen says, ‘We have a very challenging project to achieve all the Owners’ requests in a short timeframe. However we know the boat very well and we have an excellent and experienced project team working on the yacht together with the Owners’ team and our co-makers. I’m extremely confident that we will deliver another beautiful Limited Editions yacht on time and on budget for her Owners.’

The Amels 242 is the sixth from the 74-metre design in the Limited Editions range.

74-metre Amels superyacht sold

The team at Amels and Damen Yachting has signed a new build 120-metre Amels superyacht by Espen Øino.

When delivered in 2025, the Amels 120-metre will be not only the largest Amels but also the largest superyacht built to date in the Netherlands.


FULL CUSTOM ORDER

The Amels yacht is the builder’s third full custom project now on order. Rose Damen, Managing Director of Amels and Damen Yachting, says:

ESPEN ØINO DESIGN

The Amels 120-metre is the second Amels Full Custom [/api/preview?slug=en/full-custom-builds] project with designer and naval architect Espen Øino and his team.

‘We are obviously very enthusiastic to be a part of this exciting project, the largest ever built by Amels. Collaborating with the great teams from Imperial and Amels has strengthened our existing thriving relationships. Our team has worked tirelessly to create a yacht with a unique layout and a timeless external appearance blending edgy design with elegant curves. We very much look forward to seeing this impressive yacht come to life during the build process.’

120-metre Amels superyacht sold

It’s uncommon to be granted access to a yacht owner’s travel photos and even less common to be able to chat casually with him and his children about those travels or about yachting in general. When it comes to the Amels 180 GENE MACHINE, it’s all about the kids.
I expected the interview to focus on GENE MACHINE’s 9,000 nautical mile journey last year from the French Riviera to Svalbard, Norway, but that turns out to be starting the story in the middle. Dr. Jonathan Rothberg is an American chemical engineer and biologist, inventor and entrepreneur. The fact that his yacht is named GENE MACHINE provides a clue about the direction of both his science and his business. He developed a high-speed ‘Next-Gen’ DNA sequencing process, motivated by the opportunity to impact the lives of the people he loves.

Immersing himself in genetics and computers, Dr. Rothberg invented an entirely new way to rapidly sequence genomes. He founded 454 Life Sciences and brought to market the first new method for gene sequencing since the 1980s by unlocking a massive parallel DNA sequencing process capable of cataloguing whole human genomes for the first time.
In 2010, with a new company called Ion Torrent, he was able to continue to advance DNA sequencing allowing an entire human genome to be decoded on a semiconductor chip for $1,000. When Ion Torrent was acquired for $725 million, Dr. Rothberg set about developing his own yacht experience. 

With Noah and younger sister Elana often in tow – they are fascinated by yacht design and have put in more than 1,000 hours of research and study on the subject according to their proud papa – they visited many of Europe’s top yards discussing custom builds. In fact, they did decide on a project at Amels, ‘but by the time the yard could start the build, the delivery date would mean we would miss three summers. To me that was unacceptable.’

Summers for the Rothberg family – mother Bonnie is an M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) – are devoted to time with the children, who now number five. ‘My children are incredibly close and being together on board is part of that. I love giving them unique experiences,’ Dr. Rothberg says.

The search switched to the brokerage market for a yacht that would allow them to cruise anywhere regardless of weather. At this point in the conversation Noah vividly recalled ‘getting beat up’ when trying to get to St. Barths in a 40-metre semi-displacement yacht.
SO WHAT BROUGHT THE FAMILY TO GENE MACHINE, A FULL-DISPLACEMENT 55-METRE AMELS 180 FROM THE AMELS LIMITED EDITIONS RANGE? 

‘We had actually seen this very boat, it was called ENGELBERG at the time and it had been designed for a European family with children,’ Dr. Rothberg continues. ‘But it was under contract. I was trying to figure out what our next step would be when we received a call that the sale had fallen through and that the yacht was available after all.’

‘I think my daughter Elana was really happy with that. She liked the boat and she told me she wasn’t sure she trusted my taste with a new build,’ he says laughing. 

And so a deal was struck. 

‘I understood that the family would be spending a lot of time aboard,’ says Captain Fraser Gow. ‘What he meant was five and a half or six months of the year! He likes the boat so much we have to kick him off for maintenance periods.’ Captain Gow had been second captain on a sistership to ENGELBERG when two of the Rothberg children happened to meet him while looking at sister ships. ‘They checked him out first and then recommended him,’ says the owner.

‘We spent the first summer with them in the Med,’ says Captain Gow. ‘Then the owner asked me for cruising suggestions. I put together a proposal to visit London and for a month’s cruising in the northern latitudes. I was a bit ambitious I guess, sometimes we were steaming all night to our next destination.’
Captain Gow equipped the yacht for the trip so that the family could continue to enjoy all the water sports they enjoy in warm water. ‘We just went from nylon skins to wet suits to dry suits.’ Paragliding above glaciers, watching polar bears, reindeer, Arctic foxes, beach cookouts, Northern Lights and Midnight Sun, swimming with whales… It was a special time. ‘Most people on boats take pictures of whales swimming at a distance,” said Noah. ‘We took pictures of ourselves swimming with them.’

Svalbard, just 650 miles from the North Pole and the northernmost year-round settlement on Earth was a personal favorite for Captain Gow.

‘A local food co-op delivered fresh produce to the boat and there are three excellent restaurants for dinners ashore.’

Dr. Rothberg, who holds over 100 patents himself, now heads a biotech incubator firm called 4 Catalyzer formed with the aim of transforming 21st-century medicine. One of its inventions, the world’s first hand held whole body scanner from Butterfly Network that displays real-time images on a smart phone, has just launched. He tells me several other projects are in the wings but he is not a liberty to divulge them.

For summer 2018, GENE MACHINE will mix pleasure with business, and no surprise, it’s a family project. Elana is studying earth’s smallest self-replicating organism, bacteriophage, which is densely concentrated in seawater. Phages are viruses that live in bacteria, some helpful and some are harmful. Identifying and manipulating their genome could have a monumental medical impact and serve as a canary in the coal mine for global warming.

‘One of the very few changes we have made to GENE MACHINE is to set up a lab bench for her in the Sky Lounge to test the samples she will be collecting. She’s going to be testing out my latest machine,’ Dr. Rothberg said with a wink.



Yachting with the next Gen

GALENE [/api/preview?slug=en/fleet/galene], the latest Amels 180 yacht from our successful Limited Editions range, was launched at our yard in Vlissingen last Saturday. Her name derives from Ancient Greek, meaning ‘serenity, tranquility, calmness’. She stands out with her huge open Sun Deck with pool, a charming Owners Suite with folding balcony, plus an extended Bridge Deck aft and full-beam lounge.
Project Manager Elouise Reiff comments, ‘The team did the name GALENE justice. I am very proud of the hard work done by everyone involved. Through their efforts the launch went smoothly and according to plan.’

Designed by Tim Heywood, GALENE is a superbly engineered yacht with proven reliability. She will be available for charter in the Mediterranean in the summer and the Caribbean in the winter with Y.CO. Featuring a calm, light and subtly art-deco inspired interior by Laura Sessa, the yacht will accommodate up to 12 guests in five cabins.
